Martinhal Sagres: The Perfect Resort for Larger Families
Planning a holiday for a family of five or more can feel overwhelming. Finding the right space, activities, and amenities is no small task! But Martinhal Sagres in Portugal is a true game-changer. We’ve stayed there twice, and it’s hands-down one of the best resorts for families. Here’s why it works so well, especially for larger groups.
1. Spacious Accommodation for Everyone
At Martinhal Sagres, there’s no need to cram everyone into a single room or deal with uncomfortable sofa beds. The resort offers a variety of houses and villas that comfortably fit families of up to 7 guests. If you’re traveling with an even bigger group, their luxury villas can accommodate up to 12 people.
For families of five or more, the Ocean Houses and Bay Houses are my top picks. They offer balconies on both sides, so you can enjoy the sun from morning to evening. Plus, the ‘upside-down’ design means living spaces are upstairs, giving you stunning views of the resort and coastline.
Tip: Book early to secure your preferred house type, especially during high season!
2. Childcare and Family-Friendly Activities
If you’re traveling with kids, Martinhal Sagres is a dream come true. They offer childcare starting from 6 months old—a rare find in resorts—and plenty of options to keep older kids entertained, too.
From kids’ clubs with activities tailored to different age groups to football and tennis sessions, there’s always something happening. And for some added adventure, the zip line near the beach was a massive hit with our kids.
Having these options gives parents some much-needed downtime, knowing the kids were having a great time. During the low season, kids’ clubs are included, but in high season, there’s an extra charge—so it’s worth booking these in advance.
Don’t Miss: The combination of kids’ clubs and fun activities makes this resort a holiday for parents as well as their children.
3. Heated Pools for Year-Round Fun
Pools are a holiday essential for our family, and Martinhal Sagres delivers in spades. The resort has four different heated pool areas, making swimming comfortable no matter the season.
The Pool Hangout is my personal favorite—it’s right by the beach and offers breathtaking views. The Village Pool, with its indoor/outdoor setup, is another highlight, especially for swimming lessons or casual family fun.
The heated pools mean no complaints from kids about the water being too cold, even during cooler months.
Bring Your Swim Gear: The pools are heated and open all year—perfect for kids and adults alike.
4. Beach Access and Outdoor Adventures
Martinhal Sagres is set in a stunning natural location, overlooking Martinhal Beach. It’s a fantastic spot for families who love outdoor adventures.
The Water Sports Centre offers fun activities like paddleboarding and kayaking, while the Bike Station has options for exploring the local trails. Beyond the resort, the Algarve Coast has plenty of breathtaking beaches and attractions waiting to be discovered.
What really sets Martinhal apart is its commitment to sustainability. From its construction to its operations, the resort is designed to respect and preserve its incredible surroundings.
Explore Together: Take advantage of the beachside activities and explore the natural beauty of the Algarve.
5. Dining for All Tastes
Food is a big part of any holiday, and Martinhal Sagres doesn’t disappoint. The day starts with a spectacular breakfast at the main hotel, where you can enjoy gorgeous views over the beach.
For dinner, the beachside restaurant specialises in fresh seafood, while the Italian restaurant in the main square is perfect for pasta and pizza lovers. Parents will appreciate the fact that all the restaurants overlook play areas, so you can dine peacefully while the kids burn off some energy.
The kids’ menus are excellent, and the half-board option offers great value for the quality and variety of food available.
Flexibility: It is also possible to self-cater in the excellent self-catering facilities within the Houses, so you can choose how you want to spend your holiday and watch your budget.
